Indian head massage, also known as “champissage”  or "shiro abyangha" 
combines specially herbalised oils applied warm, with pressure point massage,
to the scalp, face, neck and shoulders,
affecting the upper three chakras: vishuddha, ajna, and sahasrara.

Whether received in a spa setting or self administered,  
champissage is unsurpassed for physical harmony, healing,  vitality, and relaxation.
 

What are the benefits?

Indian head massage with shirodhara oil helps

  • increase joint flexibility in the neck and shoulders
  • improve blood circulation and lymphatic flow
  • free knots of muscular tension
  • relax connective tissue
  • aid in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products.

    An added benefit, of course, is the lustre that is restored to the hair as medicated oil is massaged into the hair follicle and worked all the way to the ends of the hair.

 

Any plain organic, food-grade oil is excellent to use on the head, but traditionally, Ayurveda prefers herbalised oils for varying benefits.

For Pitta, coconut oil and herbalised blends made with coconut oil is recommended.
For Vata, unrefined raw sesame seed oil, and herbalised blends made with raw unrefined sesame oil is recommended.
For Kapha, organic almond or jojoba oil, and herbalisedblends made with organic almond or jojoba oil, are recommended.

How to assess which dosha to address?

PITTA is associated with heat and pressure.
It is dominant in the summer.
It may be aggravated by overworking, intense emotions, or conflict.
Physically, pitta may manifest as tension in the neck, shoulders and temples.
The hair may be thinning due to stress or hormonal fluctuations.

SUGGESTED OIL:
CALMING SHIRODHARA OIL

This blend is cooling and pacifying to pitta dosha in its actions and effects. Through its floral aromatic properties, it brings peaceful joy to the mind, reducing excess heat rising to the brain and head region. Calendula, rose, honey and coconut combine beautifully to replenish lost luster to hair as well.
Directions: Warm this oil to lukewarm temperature, and pour over entire scalp, neck and shoulders. Allow to penetrate into scalp as long as possible. Shampoo twice to remove oil completely.
Ingredients: Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Sesame Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Ghee, Calendula Extract, Orange Essential Oil, Raw Honey,  Sandalwood Essential Oil, Rose Essential Oil.
Note: Coconut Oil solidifies at temperatures lower than 64 degrees. It is normal for this formula to appear cloudy when cool. Simply warm the oil before use in a basin of hot water for a few minutes prior to use.                                        

KAPHA is associated with cold damp weather and the inertia that cold brings to water.
It is dominant in the Winter and may present congestion, heaviness, and the feeling of being stuck.
The hair might be thinning due to follicular sebaceous accumulations.

SUGGESTED OIL:
 ENLIVENING SHIRODHARA OIL
A kapha enlivening and circulatory stimulating blend that is beneficial for awakening the mind, clarifying follicular accumulation and enhancing lustrous hair. Rosemary, Thyme, Lavender, and mint act synergistically as a tonic, and enhance concentration.
Directions: warm this oil to lukewarm temperature, and pour over entire scalp. Massage into scalp, neck and shoulders. Allow to penetrate into scalp as long as possible.
Ingredients: Organic Sesame Seed Oil,  Organic Grapeseed Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Rosemary Extract, Lavender Essential Oil, Thyme Essential Oil, Marjoram Essential Oil, Peppermint Essential Oil

VATA is associated with transitional seasons such as Autumn and Spring.
It is aggravated by exposure to drafts, too much movement, over socializing and prolonged talking. 
Travel, relocation and interrupted routines increase vata.
The hair may be dry, and dandruff might develop.

SUGGESTED OIL FOR VATA: either of the 2 here are fine for Vata, depending on the season and symptoms, if any. For stress and nervous fatigue, try the CALMING blend. For poor circulation, and coldness, go with ENLIVENING
