Usually performed while the client is seated, this popular massage takes around 20-30 minutes and works on the upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face to help ease a variety of stress-related conditions and relieve muscular tension. It’s simple to learn, highly effective and makes a great accompaniment to other therapies such as body massage, aromatherapy and energy work.

In India, from birth through to old age, the tradition of massage has been passed down through the generations and is very much a part of everyday family life. Receiving a head massage is also incorporated into special rituals such as weddings and births.

It’s Great for Healthy Hair

When we’re stressed, the scalp can tense and tighten up, restricting blood flow to the area. Regular Indian Head Massage can help by stimulating the blood flow to the follicles to loosen the area up, which in turn delivers the nourishing nutrients needed to encourage healthy hair growth and to promote strong and shiny hair.

Champissage is Wonderful with Oils

Oils can be incorporated into an Indian Head Massage to soften the skin and deeply condition the hair. Solavedi offers 2 specially formulated hair and scalp oils (called “shirodhara” oils) that particpants in the class may work with. Suitable for everybody, these 2 oils are considered to be either primarily enlivening, or primarily calming. As well as being ultra-nourishing to the skin and hair itself, the calming blend is also believed to help relieve muscular pain and stiffness, while the enlivening blend is particularly suitable for thinning hair and dryness in the scalp.

It’s Good for Headaches

The combination of slowly paced, circular pressure point massage with appropriate oils helps soothe neck and scalp tension, making Indian Head Massage an effective treatment for headache sufferers. With regular treatments, the frequency and intensity of stress-related headaches can reduce significantly, as the massage releases tension and promotes relaxation.

It’s Beneficial for Eyes and Sinuses

Indian Head Massage also involves working on the pressure points on the forehead and around the eye sockets to relax and soothe tense muscles and eye strain. Working on the cheekbone pressure points with aromatic oils can also be useful to relieve blocked sinuses.

It’s Portable

Indian Head Massage can be practiced almost anywhere with very little extra carry-on luggage. All you need are your hands, a small bottle of oil, and a towel.
