Imagine your life to be like a table. In order for it to stand and be functional all 4 legs must be equal, steady and in the proper placement.

Ayurveda teaches us that self care can be viewed similarly. Ayurveda calls this the doctrine of the

           4 Pillars of Health

This is universal to all humanity. But how each of us constructs, prioritizes and maintains our own 4 pillars is, and must be, highly individualized.

Modern Western healthcare typically targets and specializes in one or 2 of these pillars, ignoring or neglecting others. Sometimes it seems that improvement in that one area is so impactful that all other pillars improve simultaneously. And, if this is true, it tells us that all 4 are surely
connected and weave together the very fabric of your experience.

So, let’s look more closely at the choices
surrounding reclaiming your life of balance, joy and purpose.

DIET
Ayurveda feels so strongly about proper diet that it has been said that

“to discover the right food for your own body and then to provide it,
is your highest and hardest spiritual challenge.”

Very often, eating becomes disordered, habitual, unconscious and emotional.
Which, in turn, renders the food  non-nutritious and even toxic.
What is food to one person is perhaps poison to the next.

This Pillar alone, if not in good working order, may topple your table over time and under the weight of stress.

  DIETARY TIPS

· Learn about your body type and what foods it’s metabolism requires. Find out what to avoid.

· Avoid yo-yo dieting, and following fads and trends. For instance, some of us are born requiring animal protein while others are not.
Becoming vegan  may be good for 2 out of 8 bodies but it may not be sufficient  for the other 6 even with enthusiastic trending  patterns to the contrary

· Adjust your eating habits throughout the seasons.

· Always select the freshest food and prepare your meals at home with care. Say “no” to fast processed foods.

· Sit down when you eat. Chew well. Every. Single. Time.

Make Lunch your largest meal of the day.

EXERCISE
The human body is perfectly designed to be a self-cleansing organism. However, in order for self cleansing to take place,
thorough daily elimination is required.

Did you know that that a very large percentage of elimination occurs via the pores, the skin  and through the process of
perspiration?  So, go and sweat it out!!

This pillar of health is sometimes challenging to gain momentum with, but once you’ve begun a regular program of weight lifting, aerobic workout, inversion postures, bouncing and stretching, you will be rewarded with a new source of vitality and energy.

EXERCISE TIPS

· Consider your body type and learn which forms of exercise, the optimal intensity and frequency is best for you.
Running, hot yoga, high impact aerobics are not suitable for every body.

· Incorporate getting outdoors and using exercise as a way to enjoy nature throughout the seasons.

· The yoga sages remind us to embrace challenges and to be willing to put forth a little effort each day in order to improve.

Play! Exercise should be fun. Think of this as true “recreational activity”. You are re-creating yourself.

REST
“Don’t just do something, sit there”

This pillar of course, includes sleep at night,  but the “rest + renewal”  practices referred to here are more comprehensive than bedtime sleep alone.

This pillar addresses your nervous system and it’s capacity to become “stuck” in the “on” position, revving higher and higher the busier and more engaged with the world we become. A daily (at least once daily) re-set is essential to your vital body and your immunity strength.

But, as with all other Pillars of Health, self knowledge is really key. One person’s style of rest/renewal could drive another person crazy! Think of the differences between introverts and extroverts. Add your doshic tendencies to this consideration and you can see how important it is
to honor your self every day.

  RESTORATIVE TIPS

· Consider your emotional needs:
Are you an introvert or an extrovert by nature?
Do you require quiet time alone, unstructured portions in each day, receiving body work or, do you feel recharged by cultivating relationships with your loved ones, cooking and hosting a gathering?

· Consider your nervous system: Do you need a break in your routine such as a retreat or vacation? Can you say “no”?

 SPIRITUAL NOURISHMENT

Often overlooked by healthcare practitioners as “optional” or “religious”, this pillar of health embraces the level of your spiritual and “energy” reservoir.

Included here are the attributes of joy, pleasure, peace of mind, happiness, and the pathways of cognition and sensory delights in your life on an active basis.

Imagine if you went to your doctor and, in addition to asking about your symptoms, she then asked you how much beauty you are gazing upon regularly?

Or, how often you dance and laugh?

Or, when did you stop listening to the sounds of nature?

If never, it’s not her/his job anymore. It’s yours.

That’s what we’re talking about.

TIPS

· What’s your favorite color? (For today? This  answer will change) Bring it into your home and your wardrobe.

· Aromas and sounds have power. Become intentional and create ritual. Flowers. Aromatherapy. Music.

· If you have a spiritual path and a teacher, create an altar.
If you don’t, create an altar. Visit it daily.
