GAINING A NEW VOCABULARY
In order to work within an Ayurvedic framework of Skin Care you’ll require a basic definition of the most important terms as we’ll encounter them in our studies. Once familiar with this baseline vocabulary you will be able to tap more intimately into Ayurvedic philosophy and share your passion within your existing practice.
The primary beauty of the Ayurvedic vocabulary is that it is NOT diagnostic or descriptive of pathologies in the same way western medical terminology is constructed.
Instead, you will begin to see the 5 Elements (Mahabhutas) in expression to varying degrees, and, that your assessments will track along an energy based language, using words such as “dominant”, “strong” , “high”, “aggravated”, “empty”, “light”, “cold”, “dry”, “heavy”, etc.
You will also be introduced to asking new and different questions.
COMPARING AYURVEDIC SKIN CARE WITH WESTERN MEDICAL SKINCARE
Ayurvedic Esthetics is based on a holistic, constitutional model of Skin Care Science which bases it’s remedies and treatments on the understandings that:
There is no 1-Size-Fits-All Skincare Ritual or Product
Outer Skin Reflects the Inner Skin (this means: the blood pH, the gut biome, and hydration levels)
Seasonal Impacts Matter / Ritucharya: Winter and Summer contribute to accumulation of excess dosha (Kapha + Pitta)
Seasonal Impacts Matter / Ritucharya: Spring and Fall require corrections and support
Medical / Western Skin Care Science differs in it’s definition of Science from Ayurvedic Science in several ways:
Skin Care Science and the well known “Scientific Method” of Western Medicine relies on standardization and replication across human variables. Often because it’s research is aimed at producing an end-user treatment product that the general public will touch it must meet specific criteria for safety, long shelf life (strong broad spectrum chemical preservation systems), stability (synthetic forms of active ingredients) and be cost effective to allow for profit margins that reward the research funding.
Skin Care Science in the Western viewpoint is “local” and often reductive and microscopic.
It looks at skin as a having mechanistic functions unrelated to a multitude of variable co-factors.This is not to say that Western Skin Care Science is cold and clinical, or is lacking in wisdom. It’s just that it’s approach is extrinsic.
It’s approach to a skin problem or concern is to deconstruct, and, then rebuild better.
It often relies on tools, abradents and acids.
There is nothing inherently wrong or bad about this approach and it often yields results fairly quickly.
However, in this model, many valid, traditional ancient powers of rejuvenation such as knowledge of the sensory, subtle, and neural contributions to skin health have been left out.
Ayurveda Skin Care Science invites us to remember:
Beauty is not “located” on the face or the skin. It is of the Spirit.
Treatments that live solely on the surface of the face will never fully address the causes of the issues on the surface of the face. Lifestyle is the best medicine.
Skin Care products must consider their impact on the entire organism. This includes their impact on the planet, the waterways, the soil and the sustainability of all life.
Rejuvenation is a dynamic process made possible when prana flows freely through all channels and supports balanced metabolism. Topical products must carry Prana, not synthetics, in order to work.
Healthy skin is the result.
We are bringing this forgotten wisdom back into our skin care practices.
There is room for both (western + Ayurvedic) in your practice.
DOSHA MODEL + THE 5 ELEMENTS
The Dosha Body Type is an expression of the 5 Elements. So is your Dosha Skin Type.
In this class, we will identify basic Doshic Skin Types and Conditions as they present in your clinic or spa.
You will learn to modify the 5 Step facial according to the needs of each client and the dominant seasonal forces.
THE SEQUENCE HAS POWER
THE 5 STEP SOLAVEDI FACIAL activates your skin's own natural healing mechanisms to improve its ability to repair damage, and regenerate cellular reserves.
The treatment follows a traditional sequence of actions to address the 7 layers of your skin in its requirements for purification and nourishment, sequence of steps based on the layering of substances in the most bio available order.
INSTRUCTOR: Carollanne Crichton LMT LE AyT, Formulist of Solavedi Organics
This ordering of steps also serves to activate the biological responses leading to skin improvement including:
1. Whole Skin Cell Fluidic Communication + reconnection, via the proper hydrophillic and lipophillic balance of substances
2. Bio Receptivity within the cellular matrix via botanical extract "drivers" which penetrate cell membranes
3.Bio Dynamic Exfoliation, removal of dead skin cells, via food grade ubtans and flowerpetal packs
4. Bio Dynamic Extraction of Accumulation from the pores, via fruit cell extract AHA's, plus oil/steam emulsion followed by clay mask, replacing manual, squeezing types of pore extraction
5. pH Restoration, via herbal water infusions
6. Intracellular Nutrient Uptake + Absorption, via serums and remedial cream
7. Ojas / Lustre / Radiance via touch activation of marmas, lymphatic clearing facial massage
